Our Curriculum Vision

At Lever House Primary School, we believe that learning should be purposeful, inspiring and enjoyable. Our curriculum is built around our commitment to Learning, Creativity and Fun, while supporting children to develop positive wellbeing, emotional health, independence and the skills they need to become confident, resilient and successful lifelong learners.

Our curriculum goes beyond the classroom. We want every child to leave Lever House with a strong body of knowledge, a wide range of skills, a love of learning and a rich collection of experiences that broaden their horizons and help them understand their place in the wider world.

Our curriculum aims to:

Develop curiosity and a love of learning

We encourage children to ask questions, explore ideas, take risks in their learning and develop a genuine hunger for new knowledge and experiences. We want children to become lifelong learners who are curious about themselves, others and the world around them.

Develop a love of reading

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We want every child to develop a love of books, stories, information and ideas.

Through a rich and varied reading offer, children encounter a wide range of authors, genres, cultures, perspectives and experiences. Reading is used not only to teach children how to read fluently and confidently, but also to open doors to new knowledge, develop vocabulary, stimulate imagination and deepen understanding across the curriculum.

We want our children to become enthusiastic, independent readers who choose to read for both pleasure and purpose.

Develop confident oracy and communication

We recognise that being able to communicate effectively is fundamental to children's success in school and in life.

Our curriculum deliberately develops speaking and listening, vocabulary, discussion, questioning, reasoning, presentation and debate. Children are given regular opportunities to explain their thinking, articulate their ideas, listen respectfully to others and adapt their communication for different audiences and purposes.

We want every child to develop the confidence and language to find their voice.

Develop independence and lifelong learning skills

Children are taught to think about how they learn, reflect on their successes and identify how they can improve. Through metacognitive approaches, children increasingly become independent learners who can make choices, solve problems, persevere and apply their knowledge in new situations.

Develop our Golden Threads

Our Golden Threads provide a consistent set of important concepts, knowledge and skills that weave throughout our curriculum.

They help children to make connections between subjects and across year groups, revisit and build upon prior learning, and understand how individual pieces of knowledge contribute to a bigger picture.

Golden Threads are deliberately revisited and developed over time so that children increasingly know more, remember more and make meaningful connections between their learning.

Prepare children for life beyond Lever House

Our curriculum provides children with a strong foundation for their future. We develop responsible, respectful and active citizens who understand that they have a role to play within their school, their community and the wider world.

Create memorable learning experiences

We believe that children remember experiences as well as knowledge. Our curriculum therefore provides opportunities to learn both inside and beyond the classroom through educational visits, visitors, workshops, performances, sporting opportunities, cultural experiences, leadership opportunities and community involvement.

Learn through and with the outdoors

We recognise the value of the outdoor environment as an extension of the classroom.

Outdoor learning provides children with opportunities to explore, investigate, take appropriate risks, develop physical skills, work collaboratively and experience the natural world. It supports children's wellbeing while providing rich contexts in which knowledge and skills can be applied.

Our children have opportunities to learn outdoors across the curriculum, through Forest School and outdoor learning, nature and environmental projects, physical activity, fieldwork, educational visits and practical experiences.

We want children to develop a lifelong appreciation of the natural world and understand their responsibility to care for it.

Develop creativity and discover talents

Children are given opportunities to discover and develop their individual interests and talents through art, music, drama, dance, sport, literature, outdoor learning and wider enrichment opportunities.

We want every child to discover something that makes them curious, inspires them or gives them a sense of achievement.

Build knowledge and apply skills

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children develop a secure foundation of knowledge and understanding. Alongside this, we explicitly develop the skills children need to apply what they know in different contexts, make connections between subjects and become increasingly independent thinkers.

Develop cultural understanding

We recognise that our local community is predominantly White British. We therefore provide meaningful opportunities for children to learn about different cultures, communities, religions, traditions and perspectives.

Through our curriculum and enrichment programme, children develop respect for difference, challenge stereotypes and develop an understanding of the diverse society in which they live.

Promote British Values

Our curriculum and wider school life promote democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Children have opportunities to develop their voice, understand their responsibilities, participate in decision-making and contribute positively to their school and wider community.

Support positive wellbeing

Children's wellbeing is central to our approach. Through our curriculum and wider personal development provision, we help children to understand themselves, recognise and manage their emotions, develop positive relationships, build resilience and make healthy choices.

We want children to develop the confidence to know themselves, value themselves and know when and how to seek support.

Champion equality and inclusion

We believe that every child deserves to thrive.

Our curriculum is designed to provide appropriate challenge and support so that all children can access ambitious learning and achieve highly, regardless of their starting point or individual circumstances.

We explicitly teach children about equality, diversity, respect and inclusion, helping them understand that people may be different from one another while having equal worth and rights.

Our Ambition

Every child at Lever House should leave us knowing more, being able to do more and having experienced more.

We want our children to leave Lever House as curious, creative, confident and compassionate young people, equipped with the knowledge, vocabulary, communication skills, character and experiences they need to flourish in the next stage of their education and throughout their lives.
